As a result, databases are being maintained independently and content differs between libgen.fun and other Libgen domains. In 2020, the project was forked under an alternate domain, "libgen.fun", due to internal conflict within the project. As of 28 July 2019, Library Genesis claims to have more than 2.4 million non-fiction books, 80 million science magazine articles, 2 million comics files, 2.2 million fiction books, and 0.4 million magazine issues. By 2014, its catalog was more than twice the size of library.nu with 1.2 million records. It subsequently absorbed the contents of, and became the functional successor to, library.nu, which was shut down by legal action in 2012. In the early 21st century, the efforts became coordinated, and integrated into one massive system known as Library Genesis, or LibGen, around 2008. Librarians became especially active, using borrowed access passwords to download copies of scientific and scholarly articles from Western Internet sources, then uploading them to RuNet. The volunteers moved into the Russian computer network ("RuNet") in the 1990s, which became awash with hundreds of thousands of uncoordinated contributions. This was legalized under Soviet general secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in the 1980s, and expanded very rapidly at a time of affordable desktop computers and scanners, and very small research budgets. ![]() In a society where access to printing was strictly controlled by heavy-handed censorship, dissident intellectuals hand copied and retyped manuscripts for secret circulation. Library Genesis has roots in the illegal underground samizdat culture in the Soviet Union. Others assert that academic publishers unfairly benefit from government-funded research, written by researchers, many of whom are employed by public universities, and that Libgen is helping to disseminate research that should be freely available in the first place. Publishers like Elsevier have accused Library Genesis of internet piracy. Libgen provides access to copyrighted works, such as PDFs of content from Elsevier's ScienceDirect web-portal. Libgen describes itself as a "links aggregator", providing a searchable database of items "collected from publicly available public Internet resources" as well as files uploaded "from users". The site enables free access to content that is otherwise paywalled or not digitized elsewhere. Library Genesis ( Libgen) is a file-sharing based shadow library website for scholarly journal articles, academic and general-interest books, images, comics, audiobooks, and magazines. He purchased his first plane in 1909 and set out to become the first person to man a controlled power flight over Australia in 1910. Houdini's wealth allowed him to indulge in other passions, such as aviation and film. The performance was so daring and such a crowd-pleaser that it remained in his act until his death in 1926. In it, Houdini was suspended by his feet and lowered upside-down in a locked glass cabinet filled with water, requiring him to hold his breath for more than three minutes to escape. In 1912, his act reached its pinnacle, the Chinese Water Torture Cell, which would be the hallmark of his career. He was able to escape because of both his uncanny strength and his equally uncanny ability to pick locks. Houdini continued his act in the United States in the early 1900s, constantly upping the ante from handcuffs and straightjackets to locked, water-filled tanks and nailed packing crates. The show was a huge sensation, and he soon became the highest-paid performer in American vaudeville. Houdini's feats would involve the local police, who would strip search him, place him in shackles and lock him in their jails. ![]() In 1899, Houdini's act caught the attention of Martin Beck, an entertainment manager who soon got him booked at some of the best vaudeville venues in the country, followed by a tour of Europe. In 1893, he married fellow performer Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner, who would serve as Houdini's lifelong stage assistant under the name Beatrice "Bess" Houdini. (Although he later wrote The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin, a study that set out to debunk Houdin’s skill.) Though his magic met with little success, he soon drew attention for his feats of escape using handcuffs. In 1894, Weisz launched his career as a professional magician and renamed himself Harry Houdini, the first name being a derivative of his childhood nickname, "Ehrie," and the last an homage to the great French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. It was there that he became interested in trapeze arts. When he was 13, Weisz moved with his father to New York City, taking on odd jobs and living in a boarding house before the rest of the family joined them. One of seven children born to a Jewish rabbi and his wife, Weisz moved with his family as a child to Appleton, Wisconsin, where he later claimed he was born. Houdini was born Erich Weisz on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary. Houdini continued performing escape acts until his death, on October 31, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan. Where I' is the moment of inertia in respect to an arbitrary axis, I the moment of inertia in respect to a centroidal axis, parallel to the first one, d the distance between the two parallel axes and A the area of the shape (=bh in case of a rectangle).įor the product of inertia Ixy, the parallel axes theorem takes a similar form: The so-called Parallel Axes Theorem is given by the following equation: Examples of integration to get moment of inertia. The moment of inertia of any shape, in respect to an arbitrary, non centroidal axis, can be found if its moment of inertia in respect to a centroidal axis, parallel to the first one, is known. The moment of inertia in such cases takes the form of a mathematical tensor quantity which requires nine components to completely define it. The concept of moment of inertia for general objects about arbitrary axes is a much more complicated subject. Having called this a general form, it is probably appropriate to point out that it is a general form only for axes which may be called "principal axes", a term which includes all axes of symmetry of objects. Usually, the mass element dm will be expressed in terms of the geometry of the object, so that the integration can be carried out over the object as a whole (for example, over a long uniform rod). The sum over all these mass elements is called an integral over the mass. Note that the differential element of moment of inertia dI must always be defined with respect to a specific rotation axis. This kind of mass element is called a differential element of mass and its moment of inertia is given by Then the moment of inertia contribution by an infinitesmal mass element dm has the same form. Since the moment of inertia of a point mass is defined by Since the moment of inertia of an ordinary object involves a continuous distribution of mass at a continually varying distance from any rotation axis, the calculation of moments of inertia generally involves calculus, the discipline of mathematics which can handle such continuous variables. Where moment of inertia appears in physical quantities The general form of the moment of inertia involves an integral. The moment of inertia of any extended object is built up from that basic definition. The moment of inertia of a point mass with respect to an axis is defined as the product of the mass times the distance from the axis squared. Moment of inertia is defined with respect to a specific rotation axis. That point mass relationship becomes the basis for all other moments of inertia since any object can be built up from a collection of point masses. For a point mass, the moment of inertia is just the mass times the square of perpendicular distance to the rotation axis, I = mr 2. The moment of inertia must be specified with respect to a chosen axis of rotation. It appears in the relationships for the dynamics of rotational motion. Moment of inertia is the name given to rotational inertia, the rotational analog of mass for linear motion. This is called precession, and is analogous to the orbit of a mass under a central force. ![]() This changes its direction but not its magnitude, causing the tip of the axle to trace out a circle. If a spinning wheel and axle is supported by one end of the axle, then the torque produced by the weight of the wheel and axle produces a torque that is perpendicular to the angular momentum of the wheel. Acting perpendicular to the velocity, it provides the necessary centripetal force to keep it in a circle. With the appropriate balance of force, a circular orbit can be produced by a force acting toward the center. This is because the product of moment of inertia and angular velocity must remain constant, and halving the radius reduces the moment of inertia by a factor of four. If the string is pulled down so that the radius is half the original radius, then conservation of angular momentum dictates that the ball must have four times the angular velocity. Using a string through a tube, a mass is moved in a horizontal circle with angular velocity ω. ![]() HyperPhysics***** Mechanics ***** RotationĬonservation of linear momentum dictates that when a mass strikes an equal mass at rest and sticks to it, the combination must move at half the velocity, because the product of mass and velocity must remain constant.
